The maximal value of 50 % of genetic recombination (RF = recombination fraction) between two linked gene loci has been explained by two models: (i) the restriction of crossovers to only two of the four chromatids of a tetrad (tetrad model); (ii) the limit of the occurrence of an odd number of crossovers between two loci, when the expected number of crossovers tends to infinite (odd-even model). This article shows that (i) is wrong. If tetrads were responsible for the maximal 50 % RF, sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) should display a maximal 100 % RF. In mammalian CHO cells we found that SCE yield a maximal 50 % recombination. Also, we demonstrated that the maximal 50 % RF for tetrads occurs because the sum of odd order coefficients in the binomial... |

The working paper discusses the trends in farm employment over time in South Africa. This is followed by the presentation of six case studies of specific commodities and regions with the view to establishing the potential employment effects of various changes in the policy environment. The article ends with an assessment of selected aspects of the wider environment within which the sector operates, to ascertain the extent to which such policy shifts are feasible, i.e. whether the measured effects in employment generation are likely to happen. |

The process of organizational change constitutes a highly complex theme due to the a host of both internal and external organizational factors that may cause changes to be either facilitated or restricted. Such process, which may come as the result of a previuos planning or otherwise will also feature a varied amplitude which enables it to result in either incremented changes, when comprising but a few organizational features or strategical, if a large number of such components get reached by the process. Using these as a starting point we aimed at learning, simulating and analizing in a comparative way, the main changes in family agro-business production units in two distinct locations in the town of Pato Branco PR, which have shown to be contrastive... |

The lipids of a deep-sea hydrothermal vent arch ae on, Thermococcus S 557, were isolated, purified and structurally determined. Based on acid methanolysis and spectroscopic studies, the polar lipids were shown to comprise diphytanyl glycerol and dibiphytanyl diglycerol, typical membrane lipids of Arch aea. From the neutral lipids, 2,3-di-O-dihydro-14,15-geranylgeranyl glycerol was isolated. This novel ether lipid is, very likely, a close intermediate in the biosynthesis of diphytanyl glycerol diether in Arch aea. |

In this paper, we examine the contract design problem of banks that extend loans to poor borrowers and seek to maximize outreach while remaining financially sustainable. A dynamic model is developed that shows how interest rates can be determined based on information about productivity and diligence characteristics of borrowers, investment opportunities, correlation of business activities, peer monitoring costs, and social sanctions. The results indicate that relative to the traditional static models, the dynamic model explains better the current experience in individual and group lending in developing countries. |

User involvement in fisheries management has been around for some time, but few analytical papers have been published on the subject in Africa. Most of these initiatives fall under the rubric of co-management. But what is the concept of co-management in theory and how does it work in practice? In reviewing a comprehensive artisanal fisheries development project, we will attempt to answer this question in the context of The Gambia. |

A version of the orthophthaldialdehyde-fluorescence ammonium determination for flow injection analysis (FIA) is presented here, with a view to its use for in situ, low-power consumption systems, Thus, the reaction temperature was limited to 30 degreesC and FIA was used in stop-Bow mode (3 min stop). The calibration is linear up to 50 mu mol l(-1), but concentrations up to 100 mu mol l(-1) can be measured. Repeatability is around 1% in the range of 0.5-4 mu mol l(-1) and the detection limit is about 0.03 mu mol l(-1) Over the salinity range of 5-35 (seawater practical salinity scale) the salt effect is almost negligible (within +/- 2%); and below salinity of 5 it increases to a maximum of -9% in fresh water compared to seawater. Hydrogen carbonate,... |
